This section offers some useful revision resources for those attempting to learn ancient Egyptian - ways of testing your knowledge, which include flash cards. Some of the files must be downloaded as documents.
Hieroglyphs.net http://hieroglyphs.net A really fun site, which is interactive, and offers a daily translation challenge (and solution). On the whole, it is not too hot on explanation but as a supplement to studies it can hardly be beaten. If you want to put your knowledge to the test whilst learning at the same time, this is a good place to come and revisit. The Tools - Composer section allows you to constantly revisit grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary by letting you chance the sentences composed (via use of drop-down options) making you constantly re-use knowledge.
The “fun” section allows you to write your name in hieroglyphs, but unlike the usual hieroglyphic name composers it prompts you to select a royal title (explaining what the titles represent), some epithets, an image and a size. The outcome is a genuine-looking article which mirrors various monuments -a great tool for bringing hieroglyphs to life.
FlashGlyph http://wesheb.tdonnelly.org/ecomp.html#flash Terry Donnelly’s font, developed for his FlashGlyph program: “a program for learning Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. It contains a database of images of 256 phonological literals and determinatives and over 700 wordsigns, based mostly on the vocabulary lists in James Hoch's Middle Egyptian Grammar. Version 2.3 includes an option to print paper copies of the signlists, to make hard-copy flashcards you can take on the road with you. The application runs on Windows 95 or later. It requires the Transliteration font, which is included in the ZIP file.”
Hieroglyphics Flashcards http://home.rochester.rr.com/lucabri/ Luca Brigatti introduces his computerized flashcards as follows: “I have written two programs, initially meant as simple computerized Flashcards. One of them has later grown into a real computerized dictionary of Egyptian Hieroglyphs. Full details about this application, download instructions, fonts you will need, and a tutorial are all to be found at:
